Sony Foundation - Christmas Camp

Over the weekend before Christmas, I volunteered to photograph the kids attending the Sony Foundation Christmas Camp through the Launceston Church Grammar School. Walking into the Senior School is reminiscent of a scene from Hogwarts with its dark brickwork showing the age of the buildings and a landscape that is immaculate, green and well groomed. What an amazing bunch of children. As the children's year twelve companions learn, it really hits home how much harder some families have to work to maintain their status quo. This camp is an amazing opportunity for these families, who love their children dearly, to get some much needed time away to do the things they generally cannot do otherwise and what an amazing bunch of kids they are. I was able to witness exceptional bonds and friendships being formed between the campers and companions evident in the way they engaged with one another. In volunteering my time, I photographed the kids with their year twelve companions participating in a range of activities from sand/ball pits, cricket, football, basketball, and the most popular, buggy driving. Two golf carts had been donated for the weekend and were kept exceptionally busy by the volunteering staff chauffeur the campers. The weekend was welcomed with clear blue skies and a sun directly overhead providing twenty five plus degree temperature days. This dealt quite a challenging environment to shoot but I made the best of it through positioning of subjects and careful consideration when and where I shot. As a result of my work, the campers’ families were able to take away a small collection of photos of their child. As for the organisers, I will be collating a photo book to showcase the amazing images I was able to capture.
